Rise to the Challenge and Be a Safety Champion this National Safe Work Month

With work-related injury and disease costing the Australian economy almost $62 billion every year and 101 fatalities at work already this year, Bailey Ladders, in partnership with Safe Work Australia, are urging all Australians to be safety champions in their workplace this October.

Safety in the workplace is not to be looked upon lightly and working at heights can be particularly hazardous with falls, trips and slips accounting for 24 percent of compensation claims. 

“Working safely at heights involves more then simply being careful climbing a ladder,” explains Bailey Ladders AU NZ Managing Director, Scott Douglas.

“You have to choose safe equipment, be educated on the safe use of that equipment, take care of and use appropriate height access gear and most importantly, mindfully operate safely, everyday.”

With 15 percent of worker fatalities in 2017, due to falls from heights, Bailey Ladders believes there is still work to be done to promote safe work practices, and is undergoing an educational campaign throughout October to promote safety in the workplace.

“Safe work benefits everyone, and anyone, employers and workers across various industries can and should champion safety when working at heights,” says Douglas.

Self-employed Electrician and Bailey Safety Ambassador, Josh Rose, finds the statistics alarming, and encourages people to be more proactive about championing safety on the worksite.

“It’s not enough to just do OH&S training when you get your first job and then forget about it, employers need to start the conversation and bring safety to the forefront of workers minds, so that it is something they think about everyday.”
